Lion Air crash: Boeing hid safety info? – The Wall Street Journal

Boeing withheld information about potential hazards with a new flight-control feature suspected of playing a role in last month’s fatal Lion Air jet crash.

DUBLIN — Air disasters bring out some of our worst fears. When we're passengers on aircraft, we are powerless to do anything about our safety. We are fully in the hands of the flight crew and the airplane we are on. It's therefore very disquieting to learn that Boeing reportedly withheld important safety information about a new flight-control system on its 737s. The 737 is the model that was recently involved in a tragic crash in Indonesia, when a Lion Air plane went down, killing 189 people. According to reports, Boeing didn't tell anyone that the system can sometimes force the plane's nose down unexpectedly until a week after the Lion Air crash. As the investigation into the crash continues, Boeing's disclosures about the system, as well as potential problems with the system itself, will surely come under close scrutiny. – Felicity Duncan
