Next big thing: Smartphones that can read your mind – The Wall Street Journal

It feels at times like our tech can read our minds. This is the way of the future, says The Wall Street Journal, which points to a significant shift in ad spend.

Every time my 16-year-old son looks at a website, Instagram or Facebook, he sees advertising encouraging him to join the British army, which is significantly short of personnel. These advertisements paint a picture of heroism, comradery and a secure job, and leave out the bits about the trauma of seeing death or the dangers, which range from being killed by accident, as so many troops are, to real-world war scenarios. These advertisers know my son is pondering his future career, has probably done a bit of a search online as he explores a range of options, and they've wasted no time trying to brainwash him to their way of thinking. The ads I'm served up are different – temptations to book a cruise, buy a blouse, order furniture. It feels at times like our tech can read our minds. This is the way of the future, says The Wall Street Journal, which points to a significant shift in ad spend. – Jackie Cameron
