Financial Times perspective: SA back on UK’s Red List as alarm bells ring over new Covid-19 variant

"From noon today there's no more flights to or from the UK. It puts a spanner into the slowly recovering works of SA's tourism sector."

Things move at warp speed in this networked world of ours. Although there's only a couple dozen locally confirmed cases, alarm bells are ringing. Last night the UK government put SA and five neighbours back onto its Red List (see below). From noon today there's no more flights to or from the UK. It puts a spanner into the slowly recovering works of SA's tourism sector. So once again, coastal resorts and the Mother City will have to make do without December's once annual flood of British sun-seekers. And those who jumped back into hospitality shares will have to exercise deep breathing. Again. – Alec Hogg
