South African schools closed in late March when the government introduced a nationwide lockdown to slow the spread of Covid-19 infections. The phased re-opening of schools was initially meant to start in June, but as schools grappled with the new Covid-19 safety measures, the deadline kept getting delayed. In July, President Cyril Ramaphosa postponed the re-opening by another four-weeks – an announcement that was met with criticism by those who felt that parents were desperately needed at work. Now that most grades have been allowed back, there may still be parents who are nervous of sending their children to school.
