I was browsing at a bookstore a few days ago and noticed that one entire wall of the room was devoted to self-help titles. There were hundreds of books, all variations on the theme of "Here's how you can be better than you are."
It made me think of this article, an interview with Danish psychologist and author Svend Brinkmann, whose recent book Stand Firm argues that it's in our best interests to just ignore the self-help movement.
