Sure-fire ways to land a job – or not; The Wall Street Journal
Some of the job-prepping activities on this menu may be a bit rich for your taste, but it's all about finding what fits for you – and then crushing the job interview to land the job. I combined some of them to come up with a hoarse-voiced, pale, breathless candidate with rings under his or her eyes, settling gingerly into the interviewee hot-seat. That's after wailing like a siren to warm up your voice, taking a shot of tequila, running up several flights of stairs, or spending the night binge-watching your favourite TV series – all recommended (in moderation), to stop your mind 'what-iffing." Activities that resonated included researching the job and company, reminding myself of my qualities and why I'm 'fit', or recording imaginary questions imitating cartoon or comic voices. The last one has the benefit of perhaps rendering your interrogator genuinely funny when they ask that exact question. Wearing ridiculously patterned underwear didn't cut it for me. Of course, not really wanting the job is a sure-fire way of not being nervous and landing it. Happened to me. I stayed for 16 years and loved it. Sometimes the Random Improbability Drive just kicks in. This is a fun, thought-provoking read. – Chris Bateman
