Sensible investing is a long game. Especially in the equity market. Which is why wise heads recommend locking away share certificates in a bottom drawer – the perfect way to resist trading yourself into the poorhouse.

Following such sage advice is tougher than ever in a world where, for one thing, dematerialisation means there are no longer physical share certificates that can actually be hidden away. Worse, updates to one's portfolio are available at the touch of a smartphone's addictive buttons.
