Electric pick-up truck: exciting for retired petrolheads, but will it rev Tesla stock?

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk revealed the newest vehicle in the Silicon Valley auto maker’s lineup - a pickup the chief executive has dubbed “Cybertruck”.

I was a late developer when it comes to getting excited about wheels. After driving my much-loved diesel-guzzling Renault Clio sports classic into the car graveyard,  I moved into the 21st century earlier this year in a little electric BMW – the one referred to as an oversized nose-clipper in a Johnny English movie car chase with baddies. There are many attractions to my e-car, ranging from driving a car with the torque of a Porsche to a petrol bill of less than R200 a month. E-vehicles are the way of the future, and this was brought home to me when my gardener-cum-handyman, Tony, told me he was shopping around for an e-van. To put things into perspective, Tony is a chain-smoking Glaswegian with a large white van called Dirty Boy (with the bonnet sticker to show for it). Dirty Boy's car seats are covered in skulls and cross bones and Tony has just about anything you can think of living in the back of his van. Dirty Boy is used for a wide range of jobs, including tip dumps. So far, Tony hasn't had any luck finding an e-truck suitable for his needs. Some aren't big enough; some aren't robust enough. Looking at Elon Musk's latest offering, Dirty Boy's days are numbered. Tony might like it, but will Tesla investors? – Jackie Cameron
