Amid money troubles, Vatican turns to women experts – Wall Street Journal
Pope Francis is against ordaining women as deacons. He has written that women should be given roles that "do not entail holy orders". On the other hand, he is happy to include women in "advisory positions, also in governance". And that's what he has done. He has named six women to the body that oversees Vatican finances. The Council for the Economy is a big deal: it reviews budgets and balance sheets of all the offices of the Holy See, which consists of the central administration of the Catholic Church in Rome and the papal diplomatic network abroad, and of the Vatican City State. So the six women are now the most senior female officials ever to serve at the Vatican. And he needs their help: the Vatican's longstanding financial problems have become especially acute. The Holy See was already struggling with a soaring budget deficit, reaching about €70 million ($83 million) in 2018 on a budget of about €300 million, before the pandemic and recession hit. – Renee Moodie
