Weight loss: Is BMI a really smart way to measure human bodies?
Thigh gap is the modern way to gauge whether someone is appropriately slim, with vast tracts of fashion magazines and websites dedicated to examining why these spaces between the legs are attractive β and how to develop your own. Doctors don't pay much attention to that kind of metric, opting instead for the Body Mass Index, or BMI, which essentially assesses your weight in relation to your height. I'm tall and not particularly fit. And as fat is lighter than muscle, I suspect my BMI is kinder to me than my shorter friend who is a lean gym machine. The Wall Street Journal crunches some numbers to demonstrate that my hunch could be right. In a nutshell, BMI seems to be a flawed measure of weight in relation to the rest of humanity, but it's the best we have. Is Discovery taking note? β Jackie Cameron
