Issued by Solidarity

Solidarity will demand decisive intervention during the proposed consultation on retrenchments after Assmang issued a notice, highlighting the possible closure of its Beeshoek iron ore mine near Postmasburg in the Northern Cape.

Serious doubts exist about the continuation of operations at the mine, as its sole major client, ArcelorMittal SA (AMSA), is struggling to survive under severe financial pressure.

According to Adéle Rossouw, Solidarity organiser for the mining sector, this would be a disaster for the Beeshoek mining community, as well as the wider community around Postmasburg since the mine is a lifeline for the town and its people.

The entire workforce of the mine could lose their jobs.

“The problem is that Beeshoek supplies iron ore only nationally and is therefore at the mercy of the steel industry’s own failings. Yet, Beeshoek has always been able to deliver profitable, high-quality ore, and surely there must be a suitable market.”

“Due to the fact that they do not export, and since their only client can no longer buy from them, the worst possible option is now being considered,” Rossouw said.

In a retrenchment notice issued by Assmang Proprietary Limited, it was stated that a total of 688 permanent positions may be at risk.

Solidarity expects thorough consultation on practical alternative options for employees, including employment opportunities at other mines in the area.

To protect the interests of its members, Solidarity will actively participate in discussions with stakeholders to fight these job losses as much as possible.
