Subaru WRX: Bang for buck sports saloon

Subaru WRX There’s a new Subaru sports saloon on the block, called the WRX. It’s a car that, by virtue of the company’s history, was bred on dirt roads – tackling the toughest rally stages the world has to offer and winning in the process. There’s little doubt that this experience translates into the development of Subaru’s road-going models.

The new WRX goes back to a more ‘traditional’ motor configuration, so a 2.0 litre turbo charged unit replaces the outgoing 2.5 litre motor. Power and torque get a healthy boost and there’s a very nice CVT gearbox – one I consider to be the best on the market. Power delivery is more linear, lacing the massive turbo lag that has been such a WRX trait over the years. The upside is better drivability throughout the rev range – and of course improved fuel economy.

The chassis and differentials move in an even more driver focussed direction here. Torque is now split 55:45 to the rear – for the CVT only – making this WRX a much more balanced vehicle on the limit. For the chassis Subaru made it stiffer, and adjusted the suspension setup. You sense the higher rate springs but the dampers keep all in order. It doesn’t ride brilliantly but given the focus of the car and the body control offered, it’s a good setup. Traction is handled by the all-wheel-drive system, which of course is Subaru levels of exemplary.

Subaru WRXThankfully the interior has been brought out of the dark ages. There’s a 4.3-inch centre LCD display with Bluetooth, navigation and all the necessary audio inputs. Otherwise there isn’t too much to distract from the task of driving – just as it should be. It is spacious and comfortable, with a large boot. So while you’re focusses on driving, the family can come along for the ride, with luggage.

Subaru may have dropped the Impreza nameplate but make no mistake, they haven’t forgotten how to make an exceptionally good sports saloon. It’s practical, incredibly fast and offers great value. If anything this is something of a rebirth for the WRX; one in which Subaru were out to prove that they still know what they’re doing. Point proved, I think.
