5 must-know facts about Audi’s smallest Q – The Q2

 By Miles Downard

  1. It’s small

The somewhat debatable saying goes “size doesn’t matter” but in the SUV/Crossover world it makes all the difference. Photos are somewhat hard to judge, so here are the facts. The new Audi Q2 measures in at 1.51 metres tall, 1.79 metres wide and a total length of 4.19 metres. That’s about the size of a Nissan Juke for reference.

  1. All the bells and whistles

The Q2 will come with all the fancy gadgetry of its larger brethren – although that shouldn’t be a surprise. Audi want you to tick as many options boxes as possible. Some of the newer things on that list are Audi’s virtual cockpit, which is basically an electronic display that replaces traditional dials for things like your speedometer. You also get the option of Audi’s frontal pre-collision warning system, smartphone integration and a few other driver assistance programs.

  1. Sixteen drivetrain options

It sounds ridiculous right? How a customer makes up his/her mind I’m not quite sure. But here’s the detail. The new Q2 is launching internationally with a selection of six different engines. Along with a 1.0 litre three-cylinder turbo, two four-cylinder turbo petrol engines are available in 1.4 and 2.0 litre displacements. In addition, three four-cylinder diesel engines are available in 1.6 and 2.0 litre guise. Their power output ranges from 85 kW to 140 kW.

Now that all sounds quite straight forward, but it’s when you start combining gearboxes and Quattro systems that it fires up the combinations in exponential fashion. As an alternative to the six-speed manual transmission, Audi also offers the S tronic dual clutch transmission with seven speeds for all engines. Then in the case of the top TDI and the 2.0 TFSI motors a newly developed dual-clutch transmission is used, which has a new type of oil supply and reduced friction. Both of those may also be combined with a quattro permanent all-wheel drive system as standard equipment.

  1. Marketing speak

The Q2 is set to be unveiled in Geneva at the annual motor show which kicks off on 3 March. Audi has a reputation for going completely wild in Geneva, with purpose built buildings all dedicated to showing off the marques latest and greatest. The Q2 looks to be headlining the show and as such the marketing team has got hold of the press release to push out some typical wishy washy nonsense. Good luck decoding this one.

“The compact SUV is an urban-type vehicle for everyday driving and recreation, uniting a progressive design with a high level of functionality.”

  1. South African introduction

The Audi Q2 will hit South African shores in the first quarter of 2017. All engine details, specification and pricing will be available closer to its market introduction. Expect to pay slightly more than an A3, though.

And to round off, here’s a little teaser video..
