Lexus has built a real life, working hoverboard – with video
Well, that's quite a claim isn't it? If you've ever watched Back to the Future (which I haven't…), you'll know there was something about a hoverboard in the movie. Lexus used that as inspiration for its prototype, one-off, real-life magnetic flying skateboard.
Together with all kinds of magic and witchcraft, the team is using magnetic levitation with liquid nitrogen-cooled super-conductors and magnets to 'give the hoverboard frictionless movement of a kind that had been thought impossible'.
To make it seem somehow relevant to their day jobs, the blokes from Lexus say the hoverboard includes materials from the road car range and features the Lexus family front grille. Good one, I think that's fooled enough people.
Unfortunately the floating marvel will never go on sale, and will remain a one-off exercise. To see the thing in action you'll need to head to Barcelona over the next few weeks, where the team will be testing the prototype ahead of it's summer launch.
