VW release “don’t text and drive” message

Discovery released stats the other day relating to the number of South African's that use their mobile phones while driving. As Alec discovered, the results are shocking.

Cell phone usage while driving has a real and calculable effect on driver competence, resulting in a 37% decrease in parietal lobe activity in the brain. That's the bit that receives and processes sensory information from the body; so its rather important when driving to have it fully functioning.

According to data obtained from Discovery's driver app, the average trip involves around 52 seconds of distracted driving – which at 60km/h equates to driving 1km completely blind. As the following video from VW shows, it takes far less than that end up in a ditch.
