πŸ”’ Modern art: Buyer of shredded Banksy painting will keep it

By Felicity Duncan

In what seems like a very β€œnow” move, the buyer of the Banksy painting that shredded itself upon sale has decided that she will proceed with the sale. The shredding of the painting, formerly called Girl With Balloon and now renamed Love Is In The Bin, has been hailed not as an act of destruction but rather as an act of creation. By shredding one painting, the artist created another.

Personally, I like that interpretation of the whole episode. After all, what we declare to be Art with a capital A is fairly arbitrary – mostly a matter of social approval and established systems of value (like Sotheby’s, the site of the shredding). But my husband, who is very dubious on the topic of modern art, is a little less amused by the whole thing. What do you think?
