Recreational cannabis became legal in Canada on Wednesday, launching what will be a very closely watched experiment in how a large, prosperous, developed country can legislate and manage the safe and legal consumption (and commercial exploitation) of recreational cannabis.

Right now, the laws are uncertain and supply is limited. No one knows how this is going to play out. Some worry about the health implications of recreational cannabis use – credible science on the subject is limited, although what exists seems to suggest that it can't be much worse than what alcohol does to us. Others worry about issues like organized crime, the use of cannabis tax revenues, and a host of others.
