Whistleblowers warned about 737 safety at Boeing – The Wall Street Journal

US investigators are looking into complaints by roughly a dozen purported whistleblowers alleging safety problems with Boeing 737 MAX jets.

DUBLIN — As the consequences of the two 737 crashes that cost hundreds of lives continue to unfold, perhaps the most disturbing thing to emerge is that a number of whisteblowers raised safety concerns about the 737 during its development. According to reports, their concerns were ignored by the people responsible for making sure that the planes in question were safe. It's looking more and more as if these tragic crashes were the result of a systemic failure in America's aircraft industry. There's no doubt that these crashes and their consequences have tainted Boeing. They've also tainted America's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which certified the 737 MAX as safe. The investigation into the development of the Boeing 737 MAX has revealed unacceptably cosy relationships between the FAA and Boeing – Boeing was often involved in certifying its own aircraft as safe. They've also shown how the pressures of the competitive industry have encouraged Boeing to take a number of shortcuts on safety and pilot training. All in all, I'm almost starting to get nervous about flying. – Felicity Duncan
