Pretty much ever since we launched the BizNews portfolio in December 2014, it’s been like sailing with a strong wind behind us. In August, it hit Force Ten when the portfolio surged 12% in dollar terms, the best month yet. The table below from yesterday’s presentation also illustrates the power of compounding – after 24%pa growth, the $200k we started with is now worth $689k.

My own business background and early exposure to the power of exponential companies (thanks again Salim Ismail) pushed the stock selections towards Digital Age stocks. Best of them having been Amazon, which we put into the portfolio on Day One at $327 a share. Last night, Amazon’s share price jumped yet another $48 to a smidgeon under $3 500. Our portfolio’s ten bagger with a bit to spare…..
The only decision for those with the good fortune of having bought into stocks with such explosive price improvement is whether to take profits. Had we done so with Amazon, it would have depressed the returns achieved by the Biznews portfolio.

Among the many questions asked in yesterday’s monthly webinar was whether we’d now consider rebalancing the portfolio. I quoted Warren Buffett’s advice that the average holding period for any share bought is “forever”. In other words, keep riding your winners. Amazon proves the point.
