So as the nation heard last night, for all practical purposes the Covid-19 lockdown is over with SA’s borders re-opening at the end of the month and companies able to urge employees to get back to work.

In BizNews we’ve carried a lot of commentary lately about how damaging the lockdown has been for the economy. And with mortalities at a fraction of what was originally projected, those who always opposed the decision to put SA behind closed doors are justifiably pointing to the heavy financial cost.

South Africa’s famous futurist Clem Sunter isn’t among them. He explains why, in episode four of my new Alec Hogg Show, a long form (30 minute) biographical podcast. It’s a riveting discourse with the ultimate fox. Something you won’t hear in it, though, is how Clem might have become famous for very different reasons.

Have a careful look at the programme below and had you been at the 1964 Magdalene College Memorial Ball, you could have caught an act called Clem and John in the Cloisters Night Club just ahead of Mick Jagger’s Rolling Stones in the Cabaret Marquee. Clem says the duo were the “Simon and Garfunkel” of Oxford University. But the young lady sitting on a wall outside a Cornish pub took him on a different path.
