🔒 Alec Hogg: Covid claims Absa’s deputy CEO Peter Matlare

Covid-19 yesterday claimed the SA business community’s highest ranking member thus far when 61-year-old Peter Matlare (above) succumbed to the virus. The professional executive with the most beautiful diction outside of Oxbridge, was the deputy CEO of Absa, which he joined five years ago.

A media statement from the Matlare family last night described Peter as “a consummate professional”. That’s something which will be heartily endorsed by anyone whose path crossed with that of this polished executive. He will be missed.

We were colleagues in the late 1990s when Peter was in senior management at Primedia, a company he later headed before moving on to the top jobs at the SABC and Tiger Brands. During that time and thereafter, I found him genuinely compassionate, warm, ever ready with a smile and unfailingly consistent.

The family’s statement describes their patriarch as “a pillar of strength around whom the family coalesced……… Peter used his talent and passion for cooking to regularly gather the family for Sunday lunches.” Simple words that say so much. Hamba Kahle Mnumzane.
