🔒 Premium: A step-by-step guide to replicating our new $10 000 portfolio

Have had numerous emails asking for help with the new BizNews Shyft share portfolio. So am devoting most of today’s newsletter to the subject.

First up, the structure of the portfolio. The pic above details the starting holdings of our stocks, the number of units and percentage of total portfolio.
___STEADY_PAYWALL___

To re-iterate, the portfolio is a five year project and is based on a balance between the Nasdaq tracking ETF (QQQ: 35%); three bankers (Apple, Msft, Netflix: 35%) and the remaining 30% in six “wild cards”.

Here’s how to replicate the portfolio, with links to help:

1.) First, download the Shyft App onto your smartphone.
– If you use an Apple phone, click here to access GetShyft in the Appstore.
– If you are on Android, click here to access the Shyft app in the Google Play store.

2.) Once the Shyft App is installed, tap the Sign In button on the login screen and fill in details required. Shyft has a step-by-step process that is easy to follow – click here for more help.

3.) Once you’ve signed up, an email will be sent by Shyft. If it doesn’t arrive check your spam/junk folder. Standard Bank clients are already registered so after downloading the App, are good to go. Everyone else needs to complete a quick Digital Verification process – have your ID book/card handy. For more help, click here.

4.) To deposit Rands into the account, click on the Transact tab at the top of the screen, select ZAR and then Top Up. The details of where to deposit your money will appear. NB you must use the personal Shyft Reference Number as “Beneficiary reference” on the EFT so your funds can be tracked. For more help, click here.

5.) Once Rands have been transferred into your Shyft account – mine took around 24 hours – swap them into USD. Click on the American flag, select Buy, and the App will quote you a live rate. Once accepted Shyft instantly switches your Rands into Dollars. Amazing, I know. For more help, click here.

6.) Once the $10 000 dollars is showing up, buying shares is simple, but to expedite the process have your Income Tax number handy (as we know, SARS tracks everything). Click on the Shares tab, use the search function (hourglass) to call up the stock (ie QQQ); click “Buy”; use the + function to adjust the number of units being bought (ie 9). Hit “review” order then “confirm”. Do this with each share listed above to replicate our portfolio. For more help on this step, click here.

To summarise – with Shyft you have total control over your portfolio. The shares are registered in your name and it is your decision whether or not to replicate changes made in our model portfolio during the monthly update webinar. The webinars are held at noon on the last Tuesday of every month – you’ll be reminded in the BN Premium newsletter (ie this one). If you miss the live event, a recording is available.

A possible snag could be that you have already exhausted your annual R1m “no permission required” offshore allowance, a limit applied by Exchange Control. If that’s the case, set up the account anyway and transfer the dollars across in January, when the new year’s fresh annual allowance kicks in.

If you get stuck, there’s a “contact us” link in the App – you can also access it by clicking here. Should all else fails, you can drop Shyft’s bossman Arno an email ([email protected]) and he’ll channel it to the right person.

One final point. We have not abandoned the process of spreading purchases over three months to offset the risk of currency and share price movements.

The only reason why the full $10 000 was invested in a single chunk is because it was impossible to structure the required balance in this portfolio with $3 333. So if you have, say, $30 000 to invest, spread the purchases over three months – $10k now the next $10k in January and the last $10k in February (which is what I’ll be doing).
