Despite chaos elsewhere, since 1994 South Africa’s Treasury has established a reputation as a centre of excellence. It attracts many of the country’s brightest young minds and develops them through discipline that comes with managing taxpayer’s money and a higher purpose that drives the best public servants.
Now that State Capture is no longer a primary driver in the Union Buildings, Treasury has also been allocated suitably proficient political leadership. Cyril Ramaphosa’s finance minister Enoch Gondongwana (65) is proving to be a safe pair of hands. Now his low profile deputy David Masondo (48) is being positioned as a future ANC star.
___STEADY_PAYWALL___Masondo was guest of honour at last night’s opening of RMB’s office in New York. Given recent developments, this was a tough gig. The ANC is not on the White House’s favoured list right now. So it was a bit like entering the belly of the beast. But Masondo emerged with credit.
Unusually for a politician, his speech dealt head-on with all the tough issues. And left me thinking that if this is the kind of person driving the future ANC, perhaps there actually is something more than bluster in the party’s “renewal” strategy.
Sterkte.
