The Sharks have already been burnt by appointing a former Sharks and Springbok captain as CEO of the franchise. But Gary Teichmann has one very distinct advantage over his predecessor John Smit – he is actually a businessman. Smit took up the position 18 months after retiring from rugby after the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He held the job for three years, in which time the Sharks won the Currie Cup in 2013 and got through to the semi-finals of Super Rugby in 2014. The last two years of Smit’s time in charge were fraught with financial problems. Revenues were declining as a result of poor ticket sales and a decrease in the sale of corporate suites and season tickets. In 2015, the annual financials were not presented for board approval on time. When Smit quit in May, he told the Witness the job was not for sissies. – David O’Sullivan

Cape Town – Former Springbok and Sharks captain Gary Teichmann is set to replace John Smit as Sharks CEO.

According to Rapport, the appointment is likely to be ratified on Monday, but an official announcement will only be made at a later stage because several of the Sharks board members are currently overseas.
It is believed that Teichmann, who played 42 Tests for the Springboks between 1995 and 1999, has great support among former Sharks players and businessmen in Durban.
