Hansen makes changes to All Black team to face the Boks

All Blacks scrumhalf TJ Perenara wins his 25th Test cap in slightly unusual circumstances. It all has to do with his teammate Aaron Smith, a mysterious woman and what’s being described as a “toilet tryst” at Christchurch Airport. Perenara got the call-up when Smith was suspended for one game after grainy cellphone photographs of him and the woman leaving the toilet were published in some New Zealand media. Meanwhile the All Blacks and the Springboks put rivalry aside to join forces in support of a Laureus Sport for Good Foundation event at a home outside Durban which looks after orphans and vulnerable children. The New Zealand team to face South Africa at King’s Park is, unsurprisingly, a powerful one. It’s a team that can drop Julian Savea and still look intimidating. – David O’Sullivan

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has named his team for Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test against the Springboks in Durban (17:05 kick-off).

The match-day 23 features several changes to the side which beat Argentina in Buenos Aires last weekend.

Up front, lock Sam Whitelock moves from the bench to the starting lock position (No 5), replacing Patrick Tuipulotu; loose forward Jerome Kaino is back in the No 6, with Liam Squire moving to the bench.

Matt Todd takes over the No 7 jersey from Ardie Savea, who also moves to the bench. Charlie Faumuina replaces Ofa Tu’ungafasi as one of the substitute props.

In the backline, wing Waisake Naholo returns to the match-day 23 replacing Julian Savea in the No 11 jersey. George Moala is the only other backs change in the match-day 23, coming in for Damian McKenzie on the bench.

“The selectors believe we have picked a strong combination for this Test. We’ve been able to bring fresh players back into the group which is vital at this time of the year and allows us to continue to grow some depth,” Hansen told the All Blacks’ official website.

“We are especially looking forward to this game as any Test match against South Africa is seen as one of the matches of the season. We’re expecting to be facing a very confident South African team after their win over Australia, and a torrid battle against our traditional foe. We’re expecting them to throw the kitchen sink at us,” Hansen said.

“We’ve had a well-planned preparation this week, with the aim of ensuring that we have a full tank come Saturday, and also clarity in our game so that we can bring our own physicality and intensity to the contest.”
