Allister Coetzee not being replaced just yet

The rugby rumour mill was humming this week with speculation that Rassie Erasmus might be taking up the Springbok coach’s job. That rumour was scotched by his lawyer who said Rassie was happy coaching Munster in Ireland. One of the stories said that Erasmus, a former high performance director for SA Rugby, would be offered a five year deal. But his lawyer said Erasmus still has plenty of time left on his Munster contract and wouldn’t even be travelling to South Africa for discussions. SA Rugby then put out a statement, which, reading between the lines, suggests Coetzee will hang on to his job for now. – David O’Sullivan

Springbok coach Allister Coetzee will know his fate next week, according to a statement from SA Rugby.

Coetzee, who won just 4 of his first 12 Tests in charge of the Boks in 2016, has been under fire since the end of last year with his future hanging in the balance.

There have been conflicting reports, with the latest suggesting that Coetzee will be kept on until June at the least, when the Boks take on France in three Tests.

SA Rugby would not comment on those rumours, but they did say on Thursday that a decision on Coetzee’s future would be announced “towards the end of next week”.

President Mark Alexander said that the coaching review report-back had been received by the Executive Council and a number of decisions had been taken.

“We have reviewed all aspects of 2016’s performance,” he said.

“We have spoken to the players as well as the coach and critically reviewed the season.

“We have decided on a number of actions to make what we believe will be significant changes and will announce those as soon as possible.

“However, I would ask our supporters to have a little more patience and understand that certain conversations need to take place before formal announcements can be made.” – Sport24
