The Rumble at Ellis Park: Dr Duarte da Silva's Heavyweight Papers

The Springboks entered the first Test of Rugby's Greatest Rivalry as world champions on a 12-match winning streak, and at Ellis Park they delivered exactly that: 61% territory, 96 carries and a scrum that repeatedly folded the All Blacks backwards. None of it showed on the scoreboard. New Zealand absorbed the pressure, then punished three lapses in game management, five tries to one, for a 33-16 win. South Africa finished the match with 13 men and 23 lost turnovers. THE SCRUM IS NOTFor one Saturday afternoon I am putting away the spreadsheets, switching off the Bloomberg terminal and attempting something considerably more dangerous: sports commentary.On 22 August 2026, at Ellis Park, the Springboks arrived looking very much like George Foreman in Kinshasa: champions, favourites and built to persuade opponents that resistance was medically inadvisable.Across the ring stood the All Blacks. They looked less like a rugby team than Muhammad Ali waiting on the ropes. We know how that story ends.ROUND TWO · THE ORIGINAL RUMBLEOn 30 October 1974 George Foreman entered the ring in Kinshasa as the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world. He was 25, unbeaten in 40 fights and had won 37 by knockout. Joe Frazier had been knocked down six times in two rounds. Ken Norton also lasted two. Foreman did not so much defeat heavyweight boxers as arrange their early departure from the premises.Muhammad Ali was 32, had already lost twice and was widely thought to have encountered the one opponent no boxer defeats: time. The bookmakers made Foreman the overwhelming favourite.Then Ali did something extraordinary. He allowed Foreman to hit him. Not cleanly and not foolishly, but repeatedly. Ali leaned against the ropes, covered his head, absorbed the blows on his arms and shoulders and encouraged the most dangerous puncher alive to keep punching.Foreman obliged. He threw everything. Ali absorbed it, whispered provocations into his ear and waited for the bill to arrive.By the eighth round Foreman was exhausted. Ali came off the ropes, produced a sudden combination and knocked him down. The most powerful man in boxing had punched himself out. Ali called it strategy. The rest of us called it rope-a-dope.Fifty-two years later, Ellis Park staged the rugby version..ROUND THREE · FOREMAN IN GREENThe Springboks entered the first Test of Rugby's Greatest Rivalry as favourites and world champions, riding a 12-match winning streak.They brought the heavyweight division with them: Ox Nché, Malcolm Marx, Eben Etzebeth, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Jasper Wiese. Then, because one heavyweight pack is apparently considered insufficient in South Africa, they brought another one on the bench.The plan was not difficult to identify. Hit New Zealand. Hit them again. Replace the people doing the hitting with larger, fresher people and continue until the All Blacks expressed a preference for cricket.For long stretches it worked. South Africa finished with 61% of the territory and 51% of possession. The Boks carried 96 times to New Zealand's 83 and made 286 post-contact metres against 191. The scrum began folding the All Blacks into increasingly imaginative shapes.Jasper Wiese carried 17 times, almost twice as often as any other Springbok. He was not running at New Zealand so much as attempting a hostile takeover.The Boks led 13–12 at half-time. Early in the second half, Cheslin Kolbe's fourth successful kick stretched the lead to 16–12. New Zealand were under pressure. Their scrum was reversing. Their defensive line was being struck repeatedly by large South Africans arriving at speed. The ropes were creaking.The mistake was assuming that the man leaning against them was losing.ROUND FOUR · ALI IN BLACKThe All Blacks did not overpower South Africa. They absorbed South Africa.They defended, scrambled and conceded territory without conceding the match. When the Springboks punched, New Zealand covered up. When South Africa paused, the All Blacks jabbed.Will Jordan scored after nine minutes from New Zealand's first serious opportunity. Andre Esterhuizen replied five minutes later by running through the defence in a manner that briefly restored the natural order of the heavyweight division. Josh Moorby then slipped two tackles and scored New Zealand's second try.The Boks kept advancing. The All Blacks kept surviving.At one point South Africa had three successive scrums near the New Zealand posts. The penalties were kickable. The scoreboard was available. The Boks declined it. Why take three points when you can establish masculine superiority?Scrum again. And again. And again. This was Foreman throwing another right hand because surely this would be the one that ended it.New Zealand held. Then, in the 56th minute, the All Blacks won a scrum penalty on their own line. That was the moment Foreman looked across the ring and realised Ali was still smiling.ROUND FIVE · THE PUNCH THAT CHANGED THE FIGHTThe decisive blow came from an unlikely source. Grant Williams took too long over a clearance. Fabian Holland charged it down, gathered the bouncing ball and scored. A lock charging down a scrumhalf is rugby's equivalent of being hit by the ring post.New Zealand led 19–16. Four minutes later Ardie Savea attacked from the base of a scrum, drew defenders and put Luke Jacobson over. Late in the game Savea released Will Jordan for his second try.Jordan's two scores took him to 53 Test tries. The All Blacks finished with five tries to one. The final score was New Zealand 33, South Africa 16.South Africa had the territory. South Africa had the possession. South Africa had the post-contact metres. New Zealand had the points, which remain an irritatingly important part of rugby.The Boks lost 23 turnovers. They finished with 13 men after Marco van Staden and Cobus Reinach received late yellow cards. The heavyweight who had spent the afternoon trying to knock out his opponent was now swinging at shadows while the referee counted.ROUND SIX · ROPE-A-DOPE, RUGBY EDITIONThe parallel is not perfect. Sporting analogies seldom survive a forensic audit, which has never stopped market strategists from using them.Ali deliberately went to the ropes. The All Blacks would probably have preferred not to spend quite so much time defending their own try line while the Springbok scrum rearranged the Johannesburg geology.But the strategic resemblance is unmistakable. Foreman believed every contest ultimately yielded to force. So did the Springboks. Ali understood that force has a cost. So did the All Blacks.South Africa confused dominance with control. We assumed that because we were going forward, we were getting closer to victory. New Zealand understood that territory is not an asset until it produces cash flow—or, in this case, points.I apologise. The markets strategist briefly escaped.The Boks tried to win the argument at the scrum. The All Blacks won the match everywhere else. They moved the point of attack, passed more often—124 times to South Africa's 106—and converted five tries from limited opportunities. They were not more powerful. They were more clinical.Foreman threw the greater number of punches. Ali landed the ones that mattered.ROUND SEVEN · THE VALUATION ERRORThere is, inevitably, a market lesson. South Africa valued the match on inputs: possession, territory, collisions, scrum penalties and the aggregate tonnage of the Bomb Squad. New Zealand valued it on realised return.The Springboks accumulated operating assets. The All Blacks generated free cash flow.South Africa's problem was not that the strategy lacked power. It was that the strategy relied on power remaining decisive after the opponent had survived it.In boxing, a punch not converted into damage is an expense. In rugby, territory not converted into points is working capital. And 23 turnovers are not a temporary accounting difference.ROUND EIGHT · THE CAPE TOWN REMATCHThere is one important difference between Kinshasa and Ellis Park. George Foreman never received a rematch with Ali. The Springboks get theirs next Saturday in Cape Town.Rassie Erasmus will change personnel, tactics or both. The Boks have recovered from worse positions. They lost the opening match of the 2019 World Cup and won the tournament. They lost the first Test against the British & Irish Lions in 2021 and won the series.Foreman was allowed only eight rounds. The Springboks have three Tests left.But the lesson from Ellis Park should travel south with them: brutality is a weapon, not a strategy. The scrum must create points, not merely photographs of distressed New Zealand props. The backs must receive the ball before completing the first drafts of their memoirs. And when three points are offered directly in front of the posts, accepting them does not constitute cowardice.Sometimes the cleverest punch is the one you do not throw.THE VERDICT · A TRIBUTE TO ALI—AND THE ALL BLACKSI am a Springbok supporter. Completely, irrationally and constitutionally. Foreman wore green on Saturday, and I was in Foreman's corner.But who could fail to love and respect Muhammad Ali?
