Raging Bulls: Piet Viljoen crowned king of SA investing – full list of winners here!

EDINBURGH — Familiar faces and names dominate this year’s list of Raging Bull Awards winners, with Piet Viljoen’s RECM taking top honours for best equity fund performance over three years. The fund fact sheet shows that over five years, Viljoen failed to beat the market index, with a negative 32% over the period February 2015 to January 2016 pulling that longer term performance down. However, in recent years Viljoen’s fund dramatically outperformed the market average, with an average annual return of about 13% compared to the benchmark of just over 4%. Private investment manager Allan Gray has been named South African Management Company of the Year. The award for best black asset manager goes to Kagiso Asset Management, which is headed by Roland Greaver – a founder member of Gryphon Asset Management – and whose investment head is Abdul Davids, who joined from Allan Gray Asset Management. The annual Raging Bull Awards gala dinner took place on 30 January 2019 at the Cape Town Convention Centre. These awards were presented to the best performing South African ASISA registered Collective Investment Schemes and Management companies for the period ended December 2018.
