Despite the headwinds, Afrimat pushed its Group revenue beyond the ten-digit mark, surging 20.3% to R10.0 billion (up from R8.3 billion in 2025). Operating profit climbed 9.6% to R523.7 million, and Headline Earnings Per Share (HEPS)—a crucial metric for us as investors—jumped an impressive 32.5% to 95.8 cents.Rewarding shareholder loyalty, the Board maintained its 2.75x dividend cover policy, declaring a total dividend of 33 cents per share, up from 25 cents the previous year.The secret to this sustained profitability lies in Afrimat’s diversification. A few years ago, the Bulk Commodities segment was the primary cash cow. This year, the Construction Materials segment stepped up to the plate, contributing just over half the total operating profit (before shared services). Integration of the recently acquired Lafarge assets is also bearing fruit. By restoring the integrity of these previously neglected assets and driving operational efficiencies, Afrimat’s aggregates business provided a robust hedge against volatility elsewhere.On the Bulk Commodities front, local iron ore sales to ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) rebounded significantly, surging from roughly 876,000 tonnes in 2025 to over 1.5 million tonnes in 2026.The Bad: Smelters, Transnet, and the Cement DragBut it wasn't all sunshine, and a rational investor must look at the bruises. Afrimat’s overall operating profit margin eroded slightly from 5.7% to 5.2%. This dilution was driven by distinct structural challenges in specific segments.First, the Anthracite business at Nkomati took a severe beating. South Africa’s ferrochrome smelters shut down for six months due to crippling electricity tariffs, completely wiping out local anthracite sales during that period. Consequently, the segment swung from a profit of R57.3 million last year to a painful operating loss of R160.5 million this year. Management had to pivot hard toward lower-priced export markets just to keep volumes moving. Adding to the pain was a R118.2 million impairment on Nkomati's underground mining operation.Second, the Cement business (bought from Lafarge) remains a thorn in the side. Due to rail constraints on the export line, Afrimat’s international iron ore shipments were restricted to 721,947 tonnes—17% below its committed rail allocation of 870,000 tonnes.The Bottom Line: Looking AheadFor Ricardo portfolio investors, the thesis for holding Afrimat remains intact. This is a management team that controls what it can and aggressively mitigates what it cannot.Debt levels currently sit at a net debt-to-equity ratio of 50.2%, largely due to recent acquisitions. Chief Financial Officer Pieter de Wit has drawn a line in the sand: the immediate focus for FY2027 is aggressive cash generation to rapidly de-gear the balance sheet back to their highly conservative target of 25%.There is also a wildcard with massive upside: the Glenover Rare Earths project. Extensive testing has proven that this resource holds highly valuable feedstock for modern batteries.
