John Terblanche is the Operations Director of MAKROSAFE Holdings (Pty) Ltd. He has 15 years of experience working alongside the executive team. John is a specialist in risk management and is in charge of all national operations. What was the primary motivating factor in the choice to cooperate with SafetyWallet for the operational aspects of health and safety?

SafetyWallet membership offers employers the chance to boost their compliance not only through dedicated and extensive support, but also through the provision of rewards for every level of compliance that the member obtains. At a reduced cost, MAKROSAFE is the partner that will assist with the implementation of the H&S system at the client. With this partnership, we offer the client total flexibility to either do it on their own with the membership support or with the assistance of MAKROSAFE. Through this, we aim to have everyone return home healthy and safe after work, as well as help the client focus on what they do best, improving their business as a whole.

What role does My Safety Shop play in your partnership with SafetyWallet?

My Safety Shop offers ease of reference to all and the best prices available. SafetyWallet has partnered with several service providers, including MAKROSAFE, and has negotiated an excellent tariff to ensure the clients get the benefit thereof. My Safety Shop, through SafetyWallet, also offers additional discounts for members that are linked to their Health and Safety compliance. These are also modern times, and with the evolution of technology, we are now able to offer the applicable solutions to clients without the tedious experience of having to request quotes and pricing for health and safety services and products. Clients that then subscribe to SafetyWallet are also entitled to discounts on all services and products from the SafetyWallet Shop, which is the subscriber portal of My Safety Shop.

What are the characteristics that MAKROSAFE and SafetyWallet have in common that are beneficial to your partnership and, consequently, to the companies who are looking for health and safety solutions?

MAKROSAFE and SafetyWallet share the same purpose of ensuring that all your loved ones return home healthy and safe after work. Our clients are free to focus on their core competencies, while we take care of their health and safety. We therefore ensure that an organisationā€™s internal resources are freed up for more mission-critical activities. The use of health and safety technologies such as OHS Online allows clients to make better use of their investments and enjoy enhanced productivity and quality. Together, we have well-structured services, and the clients are always in control of what they are spending. Clients can then also perform some of the functions themselves through OHS Online, saving money. Apart from the financial benefits, services work because its processes are delivered by teams that have operational expertise and experience. Between SafetyWallet and MAKROSAFE, our value systems are also aligned, and we work towards a common purpose, which is to make sure that every person returns home safely after work.

What has been the most significant success for both SafetyWallet and MAKROSAFE clients as a result of this collaboration?

The main success factor for the clients would be the return on investment (ROI). Clients benefit from their discounted prices and fees, which frees up resources for other activities and requirements.

One can ask why a business would seek a relationship with two different health and safety consultants at the same time: Isn’t it preferable to rely just on your services, or on SafetyWallet’s support, rather than both?

Clients should not see SafetyWallet and MAKROSAFE as two separate service providers. SafetyWallet is a membership with a supporting function that will enable clients to implement their own system, should they wish to do so with their access to OHS Online. MAKROSAFE is the service provider that, because of the SafetyWallet membership, offers their services to implement the Health and Safety system on behalf of the client at a reduced cost. This gives the client freedom of choice and a more effective management of resources. At the end of the day, the client is given greater flexibility and option between using the support provided by SafetyWallet and utilising the actual services at ground-level, which are delivered by MAKROSAFE.

Is there a particular emphasis on the industries in which Makrosafe and SafetyWallet are involved?

MAKROSAFE and SafetyWallet cater for all types of industries, although we are not focused on the mining industry, and we offer limited services to the construction industry. Our main objective is to provide cost-effective health and safety solutions to small, medium-sized and large organisations. With our cost-effective health and safety services, our clients are guaranteed an above-average return on their investment. We have a national footprint and service thousands of organisations by managing their health and safety programmes.

How long do you think it would take a company to achieve health and safety compliance between the help provided by SafetyWallet and the operational work done by MAKROSAFE?

The general rule of thumb is that it takes 12 months to achieve compliance in all aspects of health and safety. However, this can be done over a shorter period of time depending on the clientā€™s needs and the available resources and funds. In my experience, rushing compliance does not always last long as the employees also need to buy into this new culture and way of being at work. Clients are able to structure their requested services on My Safety Shop so as to change the term over which they require the services to be delivered.

What are the most popular health and safety products and services used by employers today?

So far, the most common services and products requested to date are task-based risk assessments, legal appointment letters, health and safety training, with First Aid, Fire Fighting, OHS Act for management, Health and Safety Representative training, and health and safety induction being quite popular. Services such as compliance audits and the implementation of health and safety programmes are popular too.

By looking at these facts, we can see that MAKROSAFE and SafetyWallet have forged a special partnership that delivers a variety of advantages to their customers. By utilising technological innovations, the OHS Online management system and My Safety Shop make it easy for employers to have control over the health and safety elements they want to address, as well as to have control over their investment in health and safety.
