Bosman Wines : A story of sustainable excellence.

Sustainable, heritage-driven wines rooted in community, excellence and transformation, and crafted from generations of vine-growing passion and care.

With a rich 8-generation history dating back to 1810 in Wellington’s Bovlei, the Bosman family have a long-standing tradition of vine-growing rooted in heritage and community. In 2000 they acquired a farm in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley allowing these vine growers to grow cool climate cultivars as well.

The two wines presented at the conference illustrate aptly Bosman Adama transformation story. These blends express our belief that we are ‘better together’.

Since 2008, the working community on the farm owns a 26% share of the business and land on which they have lived and worked with the Bosman family for generations. These blends represent the truth that ‘the whole is worth more than the sum of its parts”.

The community’s portion of ownership is symbolized by the word Adama which means ‘from the soil’ but also: Adam Appollis (or Adama as he was affectionately called) was the father and mentor to many of the workers on the farm, and the Bosmans’ right-hand man a few generations back. Today that mutual bond of trust and care is illustrated in the red and white Adama blends.

The Adama Red is a Shiraz-based blend of selected pockets of grapes grown on the rippling slopes of the sun-drenched Groenberg mountain including the relatively new Southern Mediterranean varietals of Tempranillo, Durif and Nero d’Avola that are well-suited to our sunny conditions.

Similarly, the Adama White is a blend of Chenin Blanc and Grenache Blanc blended with the heat and drought tolerant varietals of Viura and Vermentino grown in the hidden kloofs created by the undulating mountain slopes of the Groenberg.

These well-integrated blends symbolize the unique bond of trust, mutual respect and care on the farm, illustrating that symbiotic relationship the Bosman family has today with the wider farm family as they work together to a rhythm dictated by seasons and tradition.

However, the Bosman motto: ‘Dedicated to better’ expresses much more, it reflects a broader vision framed by excellence on all fronts.

It is their life’s work and passion to seek out the best terroir and match it with the ideal varietal, then nurture those vines to produce the ultimate wine that expresses both provenance and excellence. This is because their involvement with that wine in the bottle began long before the grapes in the vineyard. Uniquely, this wine farm is also a significant producer of grafted vines for the wine, table grape and raisin industry in South Africa. Hence a significant portion of wines on the world’s shelves began their life as a grafted cutting in the Bosman Adama Vine Nursery, as do all the wines in the Bosman Family Vineyards range and across the entire Cape Winelands.

Both the Adama wines tell a story both of transformation and sustainability. These are future fit wines pioneering a way forward for the South African wine industry in a competitive, ever-changing world.

Savour every sip!
