R250 million fund raised to acquire existing solar systems
Jaltech has secured a R250 million mandate to give owners of existing solar systems the opportunity to unlock the capital tied up in their installations. The fund’s focus is on purchasing existing solar systems from property owners and then entering into agreements to sell electricity back to them at a rate lower than Eskom’s tariffs.
For property owners, the rationale is clear: not only can they recover the capital invested in their solar system, but all risks and ongoing costs associated with operating the system are transferred to Jaltech. Under this arrangement, Jaltech will be responsible for:
Generating electricity – ensuring optimal performance to meet the agreed supply.
Repairing or replacing defective equipment – including panels, inverters, and other critical components.
Covering ongoing costs – such as maintenance, system monitoring, insurance, and compliance with all relevant regulations.
Managing warranties and supplier relationships – so the property owner no longer needs to deal with service providers or technical contractors.
Ensuring technical upgrades when needed – replacing outdated equipment to maintain efficiency over the contract term.
Additional benefits for property owners include:
Immediate capital release – freeing up significant funds for reinvestment into the business or other projects.
Loan settlement – enabling repayment of any existing finance on the solar system, reducing debt and balance sheet pressure.
Operational simplicity – no longer needing internal resources to manage the solar plant.
Predictable electricity costs – paying a fixed or inflation-linked tariff that is lower than Eskom’s and shielded from sharp tariff hikes.
Improved cash flow – thanks to reduced energy costs and the removal of operational and maintenance expenses.
The fund’s mandate is limited to solar systems located in South Africa with a minimum value of R5 million.
