If you're looking for a new job for 2014, press your colleagues into action to refer you to a new employer. And, don't be surprised if some of your friends are recommending several people: it's a way to earn extra money. These are some of the clues offered by one South Africa's leading human resources (HR) experts, in this piece about how employers are drawing up their short lists. 

Mark Gray, a recruitment entrepreneur, reminds us that with many more applicants than jobs available, HR officers are quickly sifting through piles of CVS, looking to match the essential criteria in the job advertisements with individuals. That, in turn, suggests that you should take the step of doing this work for the HR officers. Draw up a summary highlighting how you fit the job specs.

And, in order to cut down on the excessive applications, some recruiters are turning to networks of people looking for referrals. "Good people know other good people and by financially encouraging recommendations, HR departments can quickly access high-quality talent who might not be on other employers' radars yet," says Mark.
