Next big leap in the Biznews.com story – London calling

Alec Hogg says every ambitious young business dreams of becoming a global enterprise.

Every ambitious young business dreams of becoming a global enterprise. That was very much part of my thinking when starting Moneyweb in 1997. To a degree, it was successful. By the time I went on sabbatical in 2010, we had a sizeable international audience and solid hard currency revenue stream through Mineweb.com, plus a profitable partnership with Canadian website Infomine.

When starting Biznews in August 2013, going global was an integral part of the long-term plan. We paid up to acquire the .com address. And worked hard at delivering quality content supported by world class processes. Our disruptive model of operating as a "David" in a world dominated by media "Goliaths" has succeeded way beyond our expectations. We think it will travel. And are now ready to take the next big leap.

Next month Jeanette and I will be opening Biznews.com in the UK. We're committed to spending most of the next 12 months in London, engaging more closely with the one million members of our tribe who live there. Being in the UK will help us cover global developments from a uniquely South African angle.

Not much will change in the way Biznews operates in SA; I'll still be contributing and the rest of the team will very much remain in situ. So you will experience little difference in your favourite daily read, except that there will be more original, globally-sourced content to consume. Including celebrating our countrymen everywhere. Because, as we have come to realise, no matter where they might be living and working, there is no such thing as an ex-South African.
