A well-intentioned friend spoiled yesterday by sending a video showing the appalling behaviour by protestors on Clifton Beach.
They applied shock tactics by butchering a live sheep after abusing the animal in full view of holiday-making tourists and their globally connected cell phone cameras. Some 1300km to the north a handful of activists representing the Khoisan community continued their campout on lawns of the Union Buildings. Led by aptly named Mr Khoisan South Africa, their actions introduce a joker to the political pack by demanding that as South Africa’s First Nation, land now being squabbled over by others actually belongs to them.
As the country enters a new year in which a critical General Election looms, it is certain attention-seeking will escalate. Those charged with enforcing the law were noticeable by their absence during the Zupta era. Society cannot afford for them to be missing in action once more, as they appear to have been during the Clifton ruckus.
The best plan for 2019 is perhaps to take a deep breath and prepare for more of the unexpected. And when it looks like the lunatics have once more taken over the asylum, remind yourself that this too shall pass. Eventually.
