My elder daughter Caitlin graduated from Dublin Business School last week, delivering one of those occasions a parent simply couldn't miss. Even though it took half a day to be there, it was worth every second.

Two things struck me about the graduation ceremony. First, how talented the Irish seem to be: the pre-formalities singers were world class; the Dean, a marvellous raconteur; and many of the students scored in the world's top ten. And secondly, how global such educational institutions are nowadays: among the graduates were Asians, East Europeans and even a Van der Merwe.

The event also got me thinking of some advice one might offer a young graduate. Here's mine: Invest in lifelong learning. Don't just talk it. Actually do it. Hone your skill. Be the very best at what you do and keep getting better at it. Specialise at something others will always want and need. Because in the new world of work, that's going to be your most valuable asset.
