Bob Hewitt’s wife begs judge: I’ve got cancer, don’t send him to jail
'My Lord, I have never had to beg before, but please let my husband return to the farm as I could not survive without him,' said convicted rapist and former tennis star Bob Hewitt's sobbing wife, Delaille.
Judge Bert Bam is facing a common legal dilemma: finding that fine balance between mercy and retribution in sentencing former tennis champion Bob Hewitt at the ripe old age of 75, after finding him guilty of raping two girls who took lessons from him in the 1980s. In this article, the author looks at the desperate plea for mercy Hewitt's wife Delaille, has made to the judge. In it, she reveals the double blow she suffered the day the charges against him were made: a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, and the extra stress she and their son, Turner, have suffered at the hands of media hounding. Rape is a serious crime, and Hewitt's total lack of remorse hasn't helped his case. However, given Hewitt's age, and the decades it took the complainants to come forward with their allegations, it will be interesting to see if his wife's impassioned plea and her illness sway the judge away from a custodial sentence. – Marika Sboros
