Eskom strikes again: Rolling blackouts reported, on Twitter

Wondering whether the ‘hiccup’ of a power cut today was intentional, considering how short the notice was. Some of our Joburgers, Alec Hogg included, are still sitting in darkness, at 9:00pm. Eskom updated its Twitter followers of the blackouts just before they took place. Great stuff. – CH

JOHANNESBURG, March 25 (Reuters) – South Africa’s Eskom [ESCJ. UL] will cut 2,000 megawatts of electricity from 1400 GMT to 2000 GMT on Wednesday, the power utility said on its official Twitter account.

“Any additional changes on the already vulnerable and constrained power system could lead to a change,” the state-owned utility said without elaborating.

South Africans face frequent power cuts which the struggling Eskom implements to prevent the national grid from being overwhelmed as Africa’s most advanced economy faces its worst energy crisis since 2008.
