By Alec Hogg. The big takeaway from the Brenthurst Foundation's latest poll, released yesterday, will trouble any sensible South African. While the media reports focused on the continued slide of the ANC (now 41%) and a narrowing of the gap between it and the Multi Party Charter (36%) – the real story is a surge in popularity for the EFF..The image above tells the story. The poll looks promising for the MPC, whose constituents gained two percentage points in the past year, thanks to the IFP. That takes the alliance to within five percentage points of the ANC. But the EFF, which pundits claimed had stalled around 10%, jumped six percentage points to 17%..___STEADY_PAYWALL___.For those who have paid attention to local government by-elections in the past two years, the rise of the EFF has already been evident. Since those November 2021 elections the EFF has gained nine ward councillors in by-elections – all of them against the ANC and mostly in mainly two-way rural contests..The EFF's by-election gains are topped only by the IFP which has won 12 wards, again mostly against the ANC. But while Malema's party's wins were in numerous provinces, all of the IFP's have been in its KZN heartland. This IFP rebound is also shown in Brenthurst's poll, with a three percentage point gain nationally..DA Federal Chair Helen Zille will doubtless smile at the way things are unfolding. In her keynote at the BizNews conference in March 2022 (click here) she predicted SA's political future would be a fight between the free enterprise, open society DA and the socialist, controlling EFF. On the latest research, it's sure starting to look that way. .Sterkte.Alec.Read also:.PREMIUM: Donald Trump leading Joe Biden in America's 2024 race to the White HouseHlabisa expects IFP to win KZN in '24; urges PA to join Opposition coalitionMcKenzie vs Malema for 2024 Kingmaker: New pact talks to oust the DA & ANC from the WC…
