Cape Town – Wednesday (October 26, 2016) marks two years since the tragic death of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.
Meyiwa was shot following a burglary on October 26, 2014 in Vosloorus, outside Johannesburg and was confirmed dead while being rushed to hospital.
Meyiwa was shot in the upper body, while protecting his girlfriend, actress and singer Kelly Khumalo.
The 30-year-old was given a state funeral at the Moses Mabhida Stadium where thousands gathered in order to mourn his passing.
Meyiwa’s family have since received an insurance payout from the PSL as it is a priority to take care of any player or official when dealing with an injury or untimely death.
In November last year, Sport24 reported that Pirates chairperson Irvin Khoza confirmed that Meyiwa’s insurance payout was received by the Premier Soccer League.
Days later the South African Football Players Union general secretary, Thulaganyo Gaoshubelwe, revealed that the Buccaneers would receive half of the insurance payout.
“One of the things we are fighting as a union is the insurance policy of the PSL, which pays half of the dividends to the club. We would love to see the PSL paying all the money to the family of a player if he’s deceased,” Gaoshubelwe said.
It was only until April 2016 that PSL chairperson Khoza announced that R4m was received from Meyiwa’s insurance payout, with R2m going to Meyiwa’s family and the other R2m given to Pirates.
The goalkeeper was the sole bread winner and R4m could have gone a long way in order to provide for his parents as well as for his wife and kids.
Meanwhile, the South African Police Service (SAPS) have made no strides on the case.

SAPS went as far as to up the reward from R150 000 to R250 000 if anything concise was brought forward.
Up until the present day, it remains unknown as to who was involved into killing Meyiwa on that Sunday evening in Vosloorus.
“Senzo’s killer or killers aren’t being arrested even though there were people in the house when he was killed,” Meyiwa’s father, Sam was quoted as saying by Soccer Laduma.
“Someone from the people who were in the house should know what happened. We would have found peace and accepted what happened if we knew that someone was arrested for the murder.
“As Senzo was popular, I thought that someone would have been arrested for his death by now.”
News24 LIVE journalist, Erin Bates, was reporting from the scene the day after Meyiwa passed away and said she recalls a detective Khumalo saying that they would make an arrest sooner rather than later.
“I remember reporting from the house where he was killed the day after his murder. Years later still no closure for the family,” Bates said
“I recall a ‘Detective Khumalo’ rolling past in silver VW Polo with his crew of officers bragging to me an arrest was imminent.”
Earlier this month a report surfaced that the Hawks and SAPS are said to be vying for the case documents in order to proceed with the investigation.
A two-year-long case everyone is hoping can come to an end so Meyiwa can finally rest in peace and his family can get some much needed closure. – Sport24
