The world is changing fast and to keep up you need local knowledge with global context.
South African national hero, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, reckons one seven year term is about as much as any reasonable person should be asked to handle. So she won’t be applying for another term. Which is both a pity and a delight. A pity because the country will miss her independent voice in holding the powerful to account. What Julius Malema’s questioning achieved on the political front, Madonsela’s has done through legal channels. You do get the feeling, though that the usual lightning rod of her investigations, President Jacob Zuma, under-estimated this courageous lawyer when appointing her in 2009. Or perhaps it was he who changed over the years. Power does corrupt as we know all too well from history. Either way, the delightful part about Thuli’s departure from this key office is it opens the way for another fearless protector of the public interest. And with the incredible experience she gained during those seven years, Madonsela will surely be among the legal pioneers arguing the key cases that will define this Constitutional Democracy’s future. – Alec Hogg
