PSL is arguably one of the best league in the African continent and, commercially, it is amongst the best globally.
The PSL, in 2007, signed a record breaking deal with Supersport (television channel owned by Multichoice) estimated to be worth over a billion rand, in 2011, Supersport (SS) forked out just over R2 billion for television, mobile and internet rights.
Subsequently, a “total Sponsorship value of the League rose from under R100 million to over R230 million (and counting), an increase of more than 130%.”
16 teams make up the PSL with one team occupying the 16th relegated while the team occupying the 15th battle it out in the playoff against three National First Division (NFD) teams at the end of the season
Pretoria based side, Mamelodi Sundowns are the most successful team in the PSL era having won the title a record 6 six times. Glamour clubs, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs (tied with Supersport United) follows in the second and third positions having claimed the title four and three times respectively
PSL Competitions
The MTN8 is Africa’s richest domestic competition with the winners pocketing R8 Million. Teams finishing in the top eight bracket in the league campaign qualify for the tournament for the subsequent season. The semi-final stage of the tournament is played over two legs (home and away) with the team having a better aggregate score advancing to the final.
Telkom knockout is played by all 16 PSL teams in a one game knockout format, the winner taking home R4.25 million.
The Nedbank Cup is the South African version of the FA Cup played in the Barclays Premier League.
The tournament consist of 32 teams. 16 from the PSL and the other 16 from South Africa’s lower leagues who battle it out for price money of R7 million. The winner of the Nedbank cup gets to represent South Africa in the Caf Confederation Cup (CCC).
