Liverpool reach second spot on the log – Are they on the cusp of success?
Following their three-nil defeat of Southampton on the weekend, Liverpool leaped into second place on the log, and an elusive English Premiership title appears to be within their grasp following more than 20 years' absence from title glory.
Manager Brendan Rodgers appears to be doing great things with his team and after finishing seventh last year, has taken them to second on the Barclays Premier League log this season.
They're four points adrift of log leaders Chelsea (63 points), but share 59 points with third-placed Arsenal in what could come down to a huge title fight towards the end of the season. Defending champions Manchester United are down to seventh place on the log.
They have won the title an incredible 13 times, Chelsea and Arsenal have three with Man City and Blackburn Rover the only other two winners.
Since 1992 when the Premiership as we now know it was inaugurated, only four teams have won the title and Liverpool is not amongst them. Their last league title was in the 1989/90 season when they won the First Division (which was what the EPL was known as then).
So Liverpool fan's jubilation at the way their team's season is unfolding is fairly understandable and justified, considering the long time they have had to wait for league success.
Liverpool has one of the best records in the history of top-level football. The club has accumulated more top-flight wins than any other English team. Liverpool also has the second-highest average league finishing position for the period 1900–1999, with an average league placing of 8.7.
Liverpool has won the European Cup, Europe's premier club competition, five times, an English record and only surpassed by Real Madrid and A.C. Milan. Liverpool's fifth European Cup win, in 2005, meant that the club was awarded the trophy permanently and was also awarded a multiple-winner badge.
Liverpool has won the UEFA Cup, Europe's secondary club competition, three times, a record the club shares with Juventus and Internazionale.
