JOHANNESBURG — The closest I've ever come to a marathon was a half marathon through the desert streets of Ras al-Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates, and it's been 10kms or less ever since. And the toughest run I've heard about from friends was the Comrades ultra marathon, where some made the cut off time, and others just missed it, blaming Polly Shorts and the other hills that got in their way. So for all those who enjoy long distance running, the piece below focuses primarily on the Safaricom Marathon in Kenya, and looks at four others that are worth planning a trip around. – Stuart Lowman
