A New York Times investigation has alleged that US president Donald Trump, who presents himself as a self-made millionaire, inherited much of his wealth from his father through a number of dodgy tax schemes, including outright fraud.

The detailed report, based on thousands of pages of documents, shines a light into how wealthy Americans like Trump avoid paying their fair share of taxes through both legal and outright illegal means. Although Washington DC remains consumed by the Brett Kavanaugh issue and the Republican-controlled Congress will likely ignore the allegations, if the Democrats take the House of Representatives in the mid-term elections, they may demand a full investigation into the allegations against Trump.
