Designer Jony Ive sketches new future without Apple – The Wall Street Journal

Apple announced on Thursday that design chief Jony Ive will leave the company later this year to form his own independent design company.

As someone who loves design classic furniture like the Marcel Breuer Wassily chair or a Corbusier chaise longue, the first Apple laptop that I lay my eyes on, was love at first sight. It was minimalistic, simple, but beautifully designed and most importantly it did not look like it was built by the designer of Chernobyl like most other computers did at the time. The comments of those that you can buy two other laptops for the same price fell on deaf ears. It was so pretty. The man behind the first iMac, iBook ( I still have mine), iPod Mini (ditto), iPhone (yep), iPad ( aha) and Apple Watch (again yes) is none other than British designer Jony Ive. Ive also contributed to the design of the Apple Park in Cupertino. And now he is leaving Apple. Will that mean the end of the beautiful products that Ive influenced at Apple? Apple appears to be changing from a hardware company to a services and media company and is placing less emphasis on beautiful stores and products. Hopefully they will still tap into Ive's design genius as Ive's new company's main client is said to be Apple. – Linda van Tilburg
