Audi RS4 & RS5: Subtle nip and tuck for Ingolstadt’s BMW M3 rival

Audi has given its RS4 Avant, RS5 Coupé and Sportback performance models a facelift, with new design elements and an upgraded interior.

Audi SA has released details on the facelifted RS5 and RS4 Avant performance cars.

Both retain the melodious 2,9-litre V6 engine (also used in the S6), producing 331 kW of power and 600 Nm of torque. The RS4 and RS5 make use of an eight-speed automatic gearbox, with quattro all-wheel drive. Audi claims a 0-100 km/h time of just 3,9 seconds.

The two performance vehicles feature a redesigned front end, with a wider grille – like many of the bigger Audi RS models. Redesigned headlamps give the RS4 and RS5 a more aggressive look. While the Matrix LED headlamps are standard on the RS5 Coupe and Sportback, it remains optional on the RS4.

The top-notch interior has a 10,1 inch touchscreen as standard. Aside from the regular features – such as audio and navigation. – there are a number of RS specific details. Audi says it provides the driver with 'information on the drive temperature, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, the quattro sport differential, the tyre pressure and the tyre temperature'.

Audi's virtual cockpit plus and a 3D Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System is standard in both the RS4 and the RS5. A head-up display remains optional, however.

The RS4 Avant is priced from R1,296,000, while the RS5 Coupé is yours for R1,394,500. The RS5 Sportback is the most expensive, at R1,409,500. All three models will be made available locally in early April.

The trio of high-performance Audis won't have the stage all to themselves, though. BMW's iconic M3 sedan and M4 coupé are set to launch soon, with BMW calling them the 'standard-bearers for racing-car exhilaration in everyday driving'.

Only the Competition derivatives will be offered locally, producing 375 kW and 650 Nm of torque. Expect them in the first half of 2021, says the Munich-based firm.
