Driven: Audi A3 sedan
This phenomenon means proportions are getting out of control, kind of like how the human body slowly becomes fat and a bit saggy as the years roll by. There are lots of cars that used to be good looking, but now aren't – especially sedans.
I have however questioned this premise since the Audi A3 sedan was released. There isn't an angle from which the booted A3 isn't perfect; it's taut, low, wide, menacing – everything I like in a car –and just so in terms of size.
But isn't that just like an estate agent calling a home 'cosy'?
Good point. The A3 sedan isn't going to suit the average family needing to cart a couple teenagers plus luggage on holiday. The back is a bit cramped for example; and the boot, while good enough for a monthly shop, won't swallow half what a Corolla would manage.
So there's good reason for cars getting bigger then?
No. Because not everyone is at that stage in life where kids are on the menu. In which case a big boot and rear leg room are of little-to-no concern. So, is that you?
Yip, that's me.
Great. So with the A3 sedan you can choose from either a turbocharged petrol or diesel motor, both of which are darn impressive. I drove the 2.0 litre diesel which has 110kW, 320 torques and a seven speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. It's exceptionally refined, smooth and massively economical. Pretty quick too.
The interior is straight out of Audi's playbook. Utterly understated, faultlessly formed, magically minimalist. Other than hard seats I didn't find much to complain about.
Under the skin the A3 sedan uses electromechanical steering, so it gives a light, well weighted feel. There's very little feedback from the road, though. Audi's Drive Select system allows the driver to alter throttle response, steering weight and suspension set-ups by selecting a mode between Dynamic, Economy and Comfort. It does little to improve feel, but can make your Audi more uncomfortable if you'd like.
And the verdict is?
I'm a big fan of compact saloons. They look brilliant. This one's no different and because it's an Audi it's made well. The only disappointment is a hard ride that can't be adjusted enough with the Drive Select system and terribly numb steering. Otherwise it's great.
