Spending a week with the new Volkswagen Amarok Life 2.0 TDI 4MOTION is a bit like sharing a flat with a rugged outdoorsman who also happens to be an architect. It’s capable, confident, and surprisingly refined – all wrapped up in a no-nonsense exterior that still manages to turn heads in the Woolies parking lot.
Now in its second generation, the Amarok has undergone more than just a facelift. Co-developed with Ford (yes, this Amarok shares its underpinnings with the new Ranger), the VW version is unmistakably its own beast – thanks to clean ‘teutonic’ design, a sharply contoured bonnet, and that big bold grille that says, “I do squats.”
Under the bonnet of the Life lies a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 125kW and 405Nm of torque – modest figures compared to the V6 bruiser higher up in the range, but perfectly respectable for everyday bakkie-ing. Whether I was trundling along gravel roads or slicing through Joburg traffic, the engine pulled strongly and smoothly. The 6-speed automatic gearbox shifts neatly, but don’t expect the package to deliver lightning-fast overtaking – you’ll need to plan those a bit like a game of chess.
Volkswagen markets the Life trim as the comfort-focused middle child, and it certainly feels like it has middle child syndrome. You get cloth seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, park distance control and a 10-inch infotainment screen and not much else. While some Ford DNA peeks through here and there, VW’s fingerprint is all over the ergonomics and interface which, given VW’s propensity for every control interface being incorporated into the touch screen, is not a good thing. For example, the simple task of changing the temperature of the climate control requires going through a menu item on the screen. Not my cup of tea I’m afraid.
There’s another niggle too, in that some of the plastics inside feel more 2005 than 2025, and the Amarok Life doesn’t quite have the plushness of a PanAmericana or Aventura. But that’s a trade-off most buyers will gladly accept for its lower R780,900 price tag.

Space? Plenty. The Amarok's longer wheelbase means more legroom in the back – your rear passengers no longer need to fold themselves like deck chairs. The load bay is also more than generous, with the ability to swallow a Euro pallet sideways. Plus, a full-size alloy spare wheel is tucked underneath, not one of those biscuit-sized afterthoughts.
The 4MOTION all-wheel drive system makes light work of gravel roads and slippery surfaces. It’s not the full-time system found in some rivals – this one is selectable – but it’s quick to engage and inspires confidence off the beaten path. Add Hill Descent Control, cruise control, and a raft of airbags, and you’re looking at a bakkie that’s as comfortable going bush as it is going to Builders Warehouse.
So, who is the Amarok Life 2.0 TDI 4MOTION for? It’s for someone who needs a capable bakkie, but doesn’t want to feel like they’re driving a farm implement. Someone who enjoys weekends in the mountains, but weekdays in chinos. It's for the modern South African who likes their steak rare, but their tech medium-well.
