In the United States alone, TikTok has been downloaded over 175 million times. In 2018, the popular video app had about 20 million monthly active users in the US, and since then, that number has grown to a whopping 70 million users. On 31 July, President Donald Trump sent the influencer world into chaos by announcing his plans to ban the app. TikTok's relationship with the US government has been strained for some time, as many officials feel the app is a security risk. TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, is Chinese, potentially giving the Chinese government access to American user data. However, TikTok and ByteDance have fervently denied any relationship with the Chinese government. Trump's threats to shut down the app in the US have halted ByteDance's negotiations to sell the app to Microsoft, but it was announced on Sunday that negotiations have resumed. – Claire Badenhorst
